What Are Hurricane Windows?

Hurricane windows and doors, also known as impact-resistant, are made especially to withstand powerful winds and flying debris. Even if the glass shatters due to severe weather conditions, they remain intact.

That’s because they are made with two layers of tempered glass, bonded with an inside layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB). This ensures that, even if the outer glass layer breaks, the PVB layer keeps the shattered pieces in place and prevents them from scattering.

Just like a car’s windshield! In fact, car and hurricane window production processes share many similarities.

Another crucial element of our long-lasting windows and doors is their framing. Our frames are made up of sturdy and durable materials like vinyl or aluminum, making them less likely to crack, splinter, or rust.

Aluminum frames are reliable and long-lasting, while vinyl helps keep your house cool. Moreover, these materials are light, ensuring that every family member can open and close them without struggling.

Additionally, we like to offer a variety of frame styles to choose from to match your preferences and décor. After all, being safe doesn’t mean you can’t have an aesthetically pleasing house, too.

How Are Hurricane Windows and Doors Made?

Compared to a regular glass windowpane, the process of creating a hurricane-impact window is far more intricate. Our impact windows and doors need to survive a hurricane's strong winds, so we’ve set strict manufacturing standards.

The first step in production is layering several pieces of tempered glass one over the other, just like a car’s windshield. This layered design makes them resistant to shattering. Then, two pieces of glass are bonded together, leaving a thin plastic membrane made of PVB in the middle.

After completion, we test every impact glass. The process is divided on three basic parts:

  • Air pressure
  • Water pressure
  • Structural components

This is so that we can imitate a hurricane’s natural conditions as closely as possible

For example, high-velocity projectiles are thrown to ensure these windows can endure harsh impacts incoming at high speeds.

Any window or door that doesn't meet the standard must be discarded.
